Dear Masih Family:
We are shocked and deeply saddened by the brutal murder of Iqbal Masih.
Iqbal embodied the best in Pakistani youth and was an inspiration to all of us. He was a shining beacon of hope for a better life for all of the children in our world. His great courage and leadership at twelve years of age impressed and moved millions of people here in America and around the world to press for action against the enslavement and commercial exploitation of children everywhere.
We share in your profound grief and suffering over Iqbal's death. He had already accomplished so much in his brief life and we regret that he will not see the fulfillment of his efforts to help free the children of Pakistan and the world from the oppressive burden of forced labor. You have suffered a great personal loss and child workers everywhere have lost one of their most able and effective advocates. he will be missed.
We want you to know that we honor Iqbal's life and deeds will not let his cause be forgotten. we are even more firmly committed to continuing his fight to end child slavery in the carpet industry and wherever else it is exposed. Iqbal's life and memories of him can only help that fight. You have much to be proud of and his work will not be in vain.
Again, we are saddened by Iqbal's death and offer you our condolences and best wishes.
Sincerely,
Tom Harkin, U.S. Senator
