A SCHOOL FOR IQBAL

MARCH 2002 Campaign UPDATE

Thank you for visiting the "School for Iqbal" web site.

What's new?

Well, as you know from our JANUARY 2002 UPDATE, we have not stopped our efforts to help children even though the War on Terrorism makes everything we do more difficult. We press on.

To help you to press on, to learn more about child labor, we offer one publication and TWO web sites; both web sites and the publication were designed by friends of the "School for Iqbal" kids' campaign.

1. The first recommended site TEACHES ABOUT CHILD LABOR IN AGRICULTURE. We highly recommend this site to students of all ages. It's brand new this week! Sonia Rosen is a long time supporter of the "School for Iqbal" campaign. Check out the "Fields of Hope" web site listed in her message below. "Fields of Hope" launched March 27, 2002.

2. The second recommended site TEACHES ABOUT CHILD LABOR OF ALL KINDS IN ALL COUNTRIES. This site is new also. It launched in January of 2002. We were only the 131st visitor! Diane Mull is a long time supporter of the "School for Iqbal" campaign. Check out the CHILD LABOR DATABASE listed below in her message.

3. The publication is THE FOURTH R: Amnesty International's 40th Anniversary Issue (Vol.11 No.2 Fall 2001 issue). We greatly admire the work done by Amnesty International. In fact, a local Amnesty chapter (133 of Somerville, MA) first encouraged the students in the "School for Iqbal" to GO GLOBAL by designing a web site. We listened and as a result, this web site has been visited by tens of thousands of people EACH MONTH. Thanks Amnesty for believing in us. Dear "School for Iqbal" Supporters and Friends:

How are you doing? How are the kids at Broad Meadows School as well? Congratulations as you all continue on your good work. I'm off to Africa for a month tomorrow - Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana. We are conducting a rapid assessment to design education programs for children caught in child slavery in cocoa and other sectors.

I encourage you to check out the Child Labor Database that we launched in January 2002. It has background information on child labor around the world. It can be found at www.beps.net/childlabor.htm. We also have publications and materials available via the website as well. These might be of interest to you and your students.

Hope all is going well with you. Give my best to all.

Dear Everyone Who Supports or Encourages the "Bullet Can't Kill a Dream: A School for Iqbal" website:

I am so pleased to let you know that the website on child labor in agriculture - www.fieldsofhope.org is now on the web!!! Go check it out.

Student leaders of the "School for Iqbal" kids' campaign helped with "Fields of Hope" by "test driving" the site and offering advice, reactions and suggestions.

We really want people to know about the site, and that means getting the word out in cyberspace to places that teachers and students and activists will visit.

All the best, Sonia Rosen
